Preliminary Task- School Magazine

This is my flat plan. it is the basic idea of what I want my front cover and content page to be structured like. This will help me when I come to creating my actual magazine cover as I will know the basic lay out I want my magazine to be posited as. In addition to this my flat plan shows that I have thought about the structure of my magazine. My flat plan has been designed  to fit the criteria of the codes and conventions needed within my media product.

I have also included on this page some screen shots and images as evidence to show how I created my cover and contents page using Photoshop, I have also shown within the screen shots how I have edited images and graphics to adapt to my school magazine.

1) Firstly, I created the background which would be most suitable to use for the front cover of the magazine, I thought very carefully about the colour of my background to ensure it is suitable for my target audience, therefore I chose to use a gradient tool on Photoshop, as it is more appealing to the eye, compared to using one fixed colour of blue. The light blue and darker blue I chose to use as my background cover contrasts with one another in order to make the masthead, main image and cover lines stand out on the page.

2)  after that I chose an image which I will use as the main image on my cover page. The reason why I decided to chose this image is because it is an exciting image to create co-existing headlines around it without it looking overcrowded. This screen shot also shows how I manipulated my main cover image by adjusting the brightness and contrast in order to ensure that it is appropriate for my target audience and cover page stories.

3)I then added the image to a different layer on Photoshop in order to copy and paste it on the blue background of my cover page. I then began to think about the position that I want this image to be in in order to stand out but not take the attention away from the masthead which needs to be added and co-existing headlines.

4) I began to manipulate my image once again as I cropped and air brushed around the image. The reason why I don't this was because I want my image to look professional and appealing to my target audience this would not be possible if the white parts on the image stands out amongst the blue background of my cover page.

5) After I started inserting images I began to create a number of layers for my masthead, co-existing headlines and additional graphics I wish to add to my cover page. Through adding a number of layers I created the masthead for my magazine cover as well as a matching slogan. I decided to add an additional graphic of a star to my page which was created to be used as a pug once I have finished positioning my magazine information.

6) I continued to develop my school magazine cover page by adding new layers for everything that I wanted to include on my page, such as other images and adding more graphics like arrows and a cup. I continued a constant house style throughout creating my magazine cover page as well as a consistent font style. I adjusted the font size depending on the importance the text has on the magazine. For instance the masthead will be the largest text on my page.

This is my front cover page for my school magazine. I have created the cover page on photo shop, this is to practise the skills I will need when I come to focus on my main music magazine project. I have chosen to use a range of photo's with different angles some close up's and some long shots, this is to create the effect of genre that my magazine is targeted at children in Archbishop Ilsley school.

This is my content page for my school magazine, I have also used Photoshop to create my contents page. By using Photoshop I was able to crop round my photo's effectively in order to make my magazine more appealing to my target audience. I have used a consistent house colour of blue, red and gold, this is important as it will form part of the school and my magazine's identity.

I choose this image as the main image on my contents page as it is eye catching and relevant to the main story of my school magazine.  The pupil within the picture is positioned on the side so my audience can only see half of her face and the micro-phone she is holding. I thought carefully about the mise en scene of my image to ensure that it is relevant to my main story. The girl in this image also holds a welcoming feeling to my target audience through the smile on her face.

This is my main image on my front cover page. I have chosen this picture specifically as it is an easy image to make play on words stick with. For instance "Sparks" is relevant to this image as the young girl is positioned holding a fire flame, "sparks" is a familiar word which is associated with fire.  I also think this image is eye catching and relevant to one of the cover stories within my magazine.

Although I didn't use this image as my main image I really think this image stands out on my front cover page.  It is an image of one of the pupils on the boys football team which is relevant to my cover story line. This image is so effective as it is an action shot and catches mise en scene through his costume which is a football kit and football boots and his prop being a football.

I thought it was important to feature the school logo on both front cover and contents page as the school magazine is based specifically around Archbishop Ilsley Catholic school. The logo will also become part of the school magazine's identity as it represents the school. Through having the school logo present on both contents and front cover pages you are also able to see where my house style was inspired from.

This is the final image featured on my front cover page. I believe this is an effective image as it is relevant to what is inside the magazine as well as the cover stories around the page. The image also persuades the target audience to read the magazine as the pupil within this image is keen to learn, this is made evident through the smile on her face, it is also good publicity for Archbishop Ilsley School as it shows that the pupil is enjoying learning.

Self Evaluation

I think I have done well with the way I have portrayed my school magazine contents and cover page. I have tried to use a variety of necessary codes and conventions throughout my school magazine cover and contents page. However to be critical to my own work I believe that my cover page could be improved by re-sizing and positioning the images I have chosen to use on the cover page. This would make the co-existing headline stand out and won't over power the target audience with accessing information.
