Main Task- Research And Planning


So that I create a successful magazine cover I have created a list of codes and conventions that I will need to take into consideration when designing my front cover.

    I chose to select a presentation using a programme called prezzi to show the three images I have selected which I may use as my main central image for my mock up music magazine cover. In addition to this I have also added into the presentation the three possible titles which I may use as the masthead for my final music magazine cover. Also, within my prezzi presentation I have included a flat plan for my music magazine cover and contents page, this will make it easier for me when making my main product as I know vaguely where I want my cover stories, masthead and main images to be positioned.




    In addition to this I have included print screens of the questionnaire which I have created on word. The point of my questionnaire was to gain additional information from my target audience such as finding out what type of music they are most into and who their celebrity idol is.  By using a questionnaire I am also able to gain information from a wide variety of target audiences ranging from the ages of 11-18.




    Above is four specific questions which I have taken out of my music questionnaire to analyse.  These are the main questions which I need to take on board in order for me to allocate to the needs and desires of my target audience. Throughout my questionnaire i have took into consideration the main codes and conventions needed to create a professional magazine such as convergent links, Facebook/ Twitter e.c.t.

     Here I have analysed two different genres of music magazines. I decided to analyse two different types of genres of music to identify if music magazines have different codes and conventions, through this research I was able to realise that all music magazines have the same codes and conventions regardless of how different the genre type is. Both magazine's feature a famous idol of their music genre as their front page cover image, both images being mid-shot close ups. The lay out of the both music magazines are similar, the main image is positioned in the centre of the page, with co-existing headlines positioned around it. The mast head and strap lines are positioned at the top of the page. I chose these magazine covers specifically to analyse as they are both well named music artist and I have an attraction to both genres of music, by analysing these magazines I am certain that I want to create a RnB music magazine.



    I have also decided to do some research on Bauer which is an institution which runs Kerrang!, the following screen shots are evidence of the research that I have found and a couple of Kerrang! front cover's and contents pages which I have analysed in order to broaden my knowledge of music institutions and how to target a wider range of audiences.








    Before creating my music magazine front cover, contents page and flat plan I created a flat plan so I know what structure I want my lay out to be positioned as.

     As part of my research and planning I have also created a mock up cover page to my music magazine using Photoshop, by using Photoshop I was able to practise skills that I will need to apply when I create my final magazine cover page. My magazine cover is based around the R&B genre, I have chosen to use the consistent house colour of pink, white and black which suggests that my final magazine will be targeted towards young teenage girls.

    Today I have been able to take a range of original photos to add into my main cover. Within every photo I have thought about the brightness, angles and mise en scene.  All my photo's are going to be based around the genre of my music magazine which is R&B, I have tried to make my photos as realistic as I can. I have done this by using a SLR camera which is a single lensed camera that helps me create high quality of a photos.




    This is a photo I have taken with a long shot angle. I have chosen to use a long shot angle so that my audience will be able to analyse the settings of the shoot. my model has carefully been positioned within the centre of the wall with her head focused towards the right hand side, her foot is also placed onto the wall, this is to create the atmosphere of a street setting. Within this photo you can see that I have dressed my model into the brand of Adidas, she is also wearing a cap and sun glasses, this is to put an empathies on the R&B artist within the shot.

    “Aaliyah may be gone but her music lives on! This Pop princess is irreplaceable people need to understand this” Wendy Williams –Aaliyah’s Producer- Rages Back at Aaliyah’s Critics with Flames!


    August 21st 2001 a twin-engine plane was discovered when crashing in the Bahamas killing our No.1 pop princess artist Aaliyah. The well-known celebrity icon Aaliyah was pronounced dead at the scene but was that really the end of Aaliyah?

    “Aaliyah may be gone but her music lives on!” says ex- manager Wendy Williams and quite right to as Chris Brown releases new track “They Don’t Know” featuring prior unheard vocals from Aaliyah’s unrealised track of no matter what. But who else is pondering with Aaliyah’s unrealised tracks?  Circumstances like this angers a small majority of fans of the young performer who gained her first hit at just 14 years of age. “it was evident from the start Aaliyah had a promising career ahead of her, just because Aaliyah’s gone doesn't mean her memory is” Wendy Williams 42, of new York city voices her opinion to our exclusive television and magazine reporters to allow us to get a wider insight into her thoughts and opinions about the situation.

    ‘Aaliyah lived up to her name each and every day’ declares Michael Houghton Aaliyah’s father. Aaliyah’s name transferring to ‘the highest, most exalted one’ from Arabic, The multi talented dancer, R&B singer and actress proved this throughout her life. She got signed at the age of 12 to Henderson’s Blackground records and at just the age of 14 she realised the track “age ain't nothing but a number” which sold 74,000 copies in just the first week of the album being realised and over three million copies were sold in the United States proving that Aaliyah was at the top of her peak. Throughout Aaliyah’s life time she always put others needs before her own says brother Rohan who then goes on to emphasise that Aaliyah’s memory needs to live on through the new R&B vocalists of today such as Chris Brown and Drake.

    However devoted fans of Aaliyah find it felonious to use Aaliyah’s unrealised tracks as we found out when interviewing a multiply number of teenagers in Aaliyah’s home town of Detroit. “Why should other vocalists get credit for Aaliyah’s work?” expresses Teanna 15 in disgust. “Aaliyah will never be forgotten regardless of who tries to rip of her music” After reporting back to Wendy William’s about what a small minority of young adults who criticize what she is allowing Wendy fires back with rage! “This is what my Aaliyah would have wanted” replies Wendy whilst breaking down in tears. “I knew Aaliyah very well and I know what she would have wanted and that is to allow other vocalists to use her music and learn from it. After all music is a shared talent which brings people together” It is evident from the day the young princess Aaliyah stepped foot on stage that she was going to leave her own imprint on the hearts of many communities, despite the critics Brown proceeds in making his album “they don’t know” which will be realised march 2015.  Brown clarified exclusively to our producers the main concept of his video shoot and song realise is to better the society of today. Brown states “I shot it in the ‘hood’. I went to 60th street and cedar block. My aim is to bring both worlds together and trying to uplift the poverty side of the community and show them where I’m from. I’m from Virginia, but everyone round here comes from a broken home or is broke- I remember when I was”.
    Wendy Williams, Aaliyah’s ex executive producer encourages other young vocals in our day and age to use Aaliyah’s music and allow her memory to live on forever.  “Aaliyah had a special talent, many loved and admired her. She was a beautiful person inside and out and her music was out of this world! It is criminal to not allow other young artists to use and learn from her music” says Wendy.  After giving Chris Brown the go ahead Wendy drew criticism from Fans upset with the casting of the music video stating that it disrespects the life of Aaliyah our own princess of pop. The fans didn’t stop there though Aaliyah’s devoted fans took to twitter for more criticism, disapproving everything from how the Artist Chris Brown has portrayed both himself and Aaliyah in his recent music video down to how the way the music video has been produced. Wendy Fires back in range stating that she wouldn't of done anything differently if she did have the chance to do it all again. “I regret nothing” the ex-producer empathises. “Aaliyah still remains loved by many that’s the problem” declares Wendy “that’s why there will always be somebody that has a criticism with the way our young princess is portrayed” Although Aaliyah is no longer on earth with us her music lives on through the other young artists of today.
